Types of Prosthesis






- Hip Arthritis : This prosthesis allows native bone to grow over it (ONGROWTH) or into it (INGROWTH) to provide a secure fit.
Ongrowth : Metal is coated with hydroxyapatite or plasma-spray.
Ingrwoth : Porous coated metal allows bone ingrowth into the pores. (Trabecular metal)
- Cemented Total Hip Replacement : Bone cement is used to fix the prosthesis to the bone.
- AVN of the Hip.
- Uncemented Total Hip Replacement : Uncemented prostheses have grown in popularity over the past 2 decades.
- Protrusio Hip
- Reverse Hybrid : One component is cemented and the other is uncemented
Types of bearing surfaces:




- Metal on Polyethylene
- Ceramic on Polyethylene
- Ceramic on Ceramic
- Metal on Metal (No longer used)
Duration of Hospitailisation :
- Unilateral (One side) – 5-6 days
- Bilateral (Both sides) – 10-12 days
